Creating ceramic lanterns from clay slabs is a fascinating two-part process that allows for a high degree of personalization. In the first session, clay slabs are carefully rolled out to a uniform thickness and cut into the desired shapes to form the lantern's structure. Shape and pattern designs, including intricate cutouts, can be added to the clay pieces either before or after the lantern construction, depending on the intricacies of the design. These slabs are then bisque fired to ensure they are sturdy and ready for further work. The second session involves individualizing each lantern with various surface treatments such as underglazes and glazes to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the lantern. This process not only results in functional art pieces but also allows for endless creativity and expression.
